KAHIUSA SINGKO: When Community Came Together in Hinundayan

KAHIUSA SINGKO: When Community Came Together in Hinundayan

On November 29, 2025, a simple church in District II, Hinundayan, Southern Leyte became a gathering place for service, compassion, and shared purpose.

The E-Hatud Outreach Program partnered with Kahiusa for the NGO’s 5th community mission, KAHIUSA SINGKO. For E-Hatud, it marked its first outreach collaboration with Kahiusa. For the community, it became a reminder that recovery is possible when people show up for one another.

Why This Outreach Mattered

Hinundayan was among the towns most affected by Typhoon Tino, after Hinunangan and Saint Bernard. Floodwaters in some areas reportedly rose up to neck level, forcing families to evacuate and leaving lasting damage to homes and livelihoods.

Weeks after the storm, many families were still struggling. The outreach did not aim to solve everything—but it offered relief, warmth, and reassurance that the community had not been forgotten.

A Reunion Turned Mission

There was also a personal story behind the collaboration.

Jim Ong-oy, Founder of E-Hatud, and KJ Gorre, Founder of Kahiusa, were once Development Communication students at Visayas State University. Years later, they reunited not as classmates, but as partners—working together to serve a community in need.

Together with Pastor Jeannie Dick Ong-oy of Amazing Grace Mission Church, they led the activity with the help of volunteers and local leaders.

Powered by Volunteers and Bayanihan

At the heart of the outreach were the people who showed up.

Fourteen VSU student volunteers from various courses, Barangay Health Workers, church members, local entrepreneurs, and residents all contributed their time and effort. The Barangay Captain supported the activity by lending tents and assigning BHWs to help facilitate the program.

Through collective effort, the team was able to:

  • Feed 25 children and several parents

  • Distribute lunch packs

  • Share used clothing with families affected by the typhoon

Kahiusa’s continued work in feeding and clothing distribution complemented E-Hatud’s outreach efforts, allowing the mission to reach more families in meaningful ways.

Support That Crossed Borders

The outreach was made possible by more than ₱5,000 worth of donations from generous supporters.

Local merchants who contributed include:

  • 3Vs Inato

  • The Mangoe Corner

  • Accord Health

  • Jai Ong-oy

Support also came from overseas, showing how bayanihan extends beyond geography:

  • AJ’s Boarding House (Maasin), whose owner is based in Canada

  • Leo Dalimet, an OFW working in South Korea

Transportation for the Hinunangan volunteer group was provided by Dave Del Rosario, CSG Hinunangan Representative.

More Than a One-Day Activity

KAHIUSA SINGKO was not just about meals, clothes, or donations. It was about presence—about showing families in Hinundayan that they are seen, supported, and not alone in recovery.

For E-Hatud, this first collaboration with Kahiusa sets the tone for future outreach programs rooted in community partnership, shared responsibility, and sustainable service.

As rebuilding continues, one thing remains clear: when communities come together, hope follows.

Padayon sa pag-alagad. Padayon sa pag-bulig.
